Location: Slindon, West Sussex

Work carried out: Refurbishment of Old Forge with Extension to Create a Shop/Café/Information Centre

Project description:

The small West Sussex village of Slindon had lost all its community buildings over recent years and this had been regretted. The Village resolved to take on the challenge of introducing a new focal point by taking over the Old Forge building which itself had become redundant. The building was owned by the National Trust and by negotiation with the NT and the Local Authority a proposal for opening a multi-function building was welcomed – part-Shop, part-Café, part-Visitor Information Centre.

Whilst it was important to save the crumbling Forge building and maintain its idiosyncrasies, we were also called upon to expand its floor area with a new structure and link which served as an entrance lobby to both parts. The new structure had to contain the Café, Disabled WC, Servery / Kitchen, Storage and Delivery Area.

The building has not been open long but has made a significant impact on the Village in a very positive way and is well-patronised by locals and visitors alike.
