Garden Room Extension with Butterfly Roof

Nov 25, 2013

Location: Hove, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex

Work carried out: Rear Extension

Project description:

This property is located in a Conservation Area. The clients wanted to connect the main house with the garden via an extension which would be more substantial than a Conservatory and which would also connect the Kitchen to the Dining Room.

A design was arrived at which was not visible from the street apart from as the most oblique of views. A brick was chosen to match the front elevation – being more uniform in colour than the mottled cheaper brick used on the Side and Rear Elevations. We chose copper for the roof finish with a butterfly roof configuration supported on a twinned Glulam beams running from wall to wall. The single hopper head and downpipe are copper. Within the roof plane we inserted two close coupled rooflights, centred to line with the opening into the Dining Room – to spill in light and aid ventilation. The doors and window lights to the Side and Rear Elevations are hardwood with stained ply panels over and exposed rafters on the underside of the roof. The doors are coupled and can be opened in different combinations to suit the changing use of the internal space. The internal floor finishes run through on the same level and connect to a drained decked area immediately outside the doors – acting as a terrace.
