Transformation of semi-detached property in Brighton

Feb 19, 2021

Location: Brighton, East Sussex

Work carried-out: An application for Conservation Area Consent was submitted for an extensive remodeling and enlargement scheme. There was some negotiation with the Local Authority’s Conservation Officer, which lead onto a Building Regulations application and Scheduled Fixtures, Finishes & Fittings to enable a smooth build.

Project description: This detached property was largely unaltered since it had been built – as a semi-detached villa. There were big level changes on the street and also to the back garden. The house was effectively split-level which created complications but also opportunities to find new and interesting rooms and spaces and to tailor these to the eventual uses by the family. These included a home cinema for professional use and an art studio as part of a loft conversion. The rear extension transformed the former rooms into a generous space for a kitchen, entertainment and relaxation.

The clients were more than capable of working with the Contractor in their finishing touches to the décor and adding eclectic furnishings which reflects their own creativity and eye for detail, so it was important to give the space on this project to let that unfold naturally. It was truly a pleasure working with them.

Contractor: Tony Fenton

What I loved about David was his intelligent realism, practical sense of architecture and the fact that he listened. It was our dream not his vision. He also found another whole floor we never knew we had! We’re very proud of our house and he helped make it our home.
